January 8, 2003
Conference Room, Barker Engineering Library, MIT

Present: Michael Jimenez (Chapter Chair), Darcy Duke (Chair Elect and Program Committee Chair), Michael Leach (National ASIST Board Member), Maggie Byer (Secretary), Margret Branschofsky (Membership Chair), Dorothy Barr (Student Chapter Liaison).


Order of Business:

  1. Minutes from November meeting were approved
  2. Reports

National ASIST Board

Michael Leach, National ASIST Board member, discussed NEASIST Board participation in two upcoming New England events. The DASER Summit, hopefully in Boston September 2003, will be supported by Program Committee. Summits’ purpose is to attract non-ASIST members.

The November 2004 ASIST Annual Meeting in Providence will be promoted by a NEASIST Board Task Force. Task Force functions will include publicity at the October 2003 Annual Meeting in Long Beach, CA. Michael Jimenez, Darcy Duke, Maggie Byer and Dorothy Barr will contribute to the Task Force.

    Action items

    • Book hospitality suite at October 2003 Annual Meeting to promote 2004 Annual Meeting, possibly sharing cost with LA chapter.
    • Create web site, coordinated through national ASIST site, to promote 2004 Providence Annual Meeting and highlight area’s tourist destinations, transport, recreation, dining, hotels, etc.
    • Explore possibilities for an off-site destination dinner during the 2004 Providence Annual Meeting, possibly at Newport mansions.
    • Explore free gifts available from Providence tourism bureau.
    • Interact with national Board members Michael Leach and Beverly Colby, past President Candy Schwartz to locate extra money in national ASIST “Special Projects” coffers that NEASIST can use to fund promotion of Providence 2004 Annual Meeting.
    • Publicize upcoming Providence Annual Meeting with message on NEASIST listserv.

Membership-Margret

Margret will carry over several action items from previous list.

Action Items

  • Jonah and Margret will demonstrate the database at a future board meeting
  • Beata, our associate chapter assembly representative at national ASIST, will request monthly rather than tri monthly membership updates.
  • Margret will get Michael’s program committee membership list and email them to find volunteers to contact Simmons members graduating and pursue members who aren’t renewing.
  • Margret, through the national membership committee, will request added data fields in membership database to identify members’ specific skills.

Program Committee- Darcy

Spring program, in early to mid April at Wong Auditorium, will treat new technologies related to online searching including information aggregators, concept maps, BLOGs.

Action items

  • Jonah is working on ways to archive the December virtual program’s Blackboard message board content.
  • Program committee will institute an annual call to recruit new members and urge inactive members to retire

Treasurer – Vince

No current report

Student chapter – Dorothy

Events: Student ASIST’s program on wireless technology in Beatley Library, December 4, featuring Scot Capeheart, was well received though final exams limited turnout. Spring programs will be finalized when spring semester begins. Student ASIST chapter has won an unprecedented third Student Chapter of the Year Award for its programs in 2001-2002.

Action items

  • Student ASIST will finalize plans for spring semester programs
  • The Board will sponsor its annual student paper award to be given at the NEASIST Annual Meeting and dinner.

3. Upcoming meeting date: February 12th Rotch Library conference room, MIT, from 5:00 – 6:30pm.

Current Action Items:
