NEASIS&T Board Minutes, October 20 , 2004
Present:
Darcy Duke (Chair), Deb Helman (Program Committee Chair), Margret Branschofsky
(Membership Chair), Kate McNeill-Harman (minutes).
- Election
ballots
Darcy reported that she has prepared the ballots for the elections
for Chair-elect and Secretary are written and will work on sending
them out shortly. Deb volunteered to help her fold and label the ballots.
Action
Items:
- Deb and Darcy will prepare and send the ballots.
- Darcy will count and report the ballots when returned.
Deb
reported that she has accepted a job at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,
and thus will be unable to serve her term as NEASIST Chapter Chair
for 2004-2005. The group discussed the need to find a Chair for
that term and whether that person could be appointed or elected.
However, the group agreed that the current ballots should still
be sent out ASAP, rather than wait for this issue to be resolved.
Action
Items:
- Deb will work on recruiting someone to serve her remaining terms
as Chair and past-Chair
- Deb and Darcy will investigate to see if any chapter guidelines
exist that would determine whether or not that person could be appointed
or elected.
2. When
to have a chapter meeting
The
group discussed the need to arrange an annual business meeting for
the chapter. They agreed that, in the future, it should be held at
the annual Awards Dinner. However, given that this did not occur this
year, it was agreed that it would be held at the Annual Meeting, in
conjunction with the Chapter dinner out, on Monday November 15th.
Action
Item:
- Darcy will email neasis-l announcing the event and asking for RSVPs
for those interested. She will then reserve a restaurant for the event.
3. Reports
Finance:
There was nothing to report in this area.
Program
Committee:
The Committee met yesterday and is making good progress on planning
the next program, Freedom vs. Control: Rights Management in the Digital
Age, to be held at MIT on Wednesday, December 15th. Speakers include:
Hal Abelson, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at MIT;
and Wendy Seltzer, staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation
and a fellow with the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at
Harvard Law School.
Membership:
Margret reported that membership is up; as of the end of September
NEASIST had recorded 195 members, including 8 organizations (and 8
addresses in other regions that may actually be connected with other
chapters).
4. Other
issues
Darcy
reported that the group continues to look for an administrator for
the list serve. She noted that the list is getting less spam due to
a new filtering system on the part of ASIST. She also suggested that
the group seek out a member to take over as web manager. The group
discussed how the list serve administrator would provide a good opportunity
for involvement by a student member, and the web manager position
would be an opportunity for a member who lives outside of the Boston
area, for which attending in-person meetings is difficult.
Darcy
reported that some ASIST members are considering planning another
DASER (Digital Archives for Science & Engineering Resources) conference,
however it is unclear as to how soon it will be held again.
Next
meeting: Wednesday, November 17, 2004, 5-6pm, Barker Library Conference
Room.
