XML: What you need to know!

Wednesday, January 20, 1999
1:00 pm - 6 pm (including social hour)
MIT Faculty Club
Sloan School of Management
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Cambridge, MA

XML, the heir apparent to HTML as the markup language for the Web, holds the promise of defining the logical meaning of documents and sharing of information currently locked away in proprietary databases and formats. The implementation of XML is already well underway and is currently being supported by web browsers, electronic publishers and document management programs. The anticipated impact of XML will be the advancement of the Web as a medium for document delivery, publishing, workflow management and data exchange.

What are the differences between XML and HTML? What effects will XML have on content? Libraries? Document Management? The role of Information Management Professionals? Please join us for a half day program to learn more about XML and explore these issues.

Public Transportation is highly recommended, as public parking lots and garages are not located adjacent to the Sloan School of Management building.

Public Transportation:
Take the MBTA Red Line to the Kendall Square T stop. This will put you on Main Street in front of the Marriott Hotel. Walk east (towards Boston) until you reach Wadsworth Street. Turn right onto Wadsworth and walk 2 blocks to the corner of Wadsworth and Memorial Drive where the Faculty Club is located at the Sloan School of Management.

From Route I-90:
Take the Cambridge Exit (exit 18) off of the Mass. Turnpike (I-90). Follow the signs to Cambridge over the River Street Bridge, and continue straight about 1 mile to Central Square. Turn right onto Mass. Ave. Follow Mass. Ave. several blocks until you cross over railroad tracks. Turn left at the first light past the tracks (Vassar St.). Follow Vassar St. to the next light and turn right onto Main St. Go one block and turn left onto Ames St.
There is a parking garage one block down on the corner of Ames and Broadway. For additional parking, turn right from Ames onto Broadway. Go one block and turn left onto Third. Take Third to Binney St. where there are other public garages.

At the end of the exit ramp, turn right where the signs direct you to Memorial Drive and the Longfellow Bridge. Go over the bridge into Cambridge. The road you are on becomes Broadway at the first light. A parking garage is located on your left, half a block further down.
